Mustang was only opened to trekkerrs
in 1991. The Department of Immigration issues only a
small number of special permits to protect the local
Tibetan traditions from outside influence as well as to
protect the environment. This semi-autonomous, heavily
Tibetan influenced region was described by Tilman as
“Fascinatingly ugly country, the more fascinating for
being so little known.” Indeed, the trek to Lo Mantang
is through an almost treeless, barren landscape, along a
steeply undulating rocky trail, from which there are
panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhauligiri and a
range of other soaring peaks. |

Kagbeni-Chele (3300m) :
There is a trail up the east bank of the Kali
Gandaki that climbs over many ridges as it heads
north and reaches Tangbe village. The town is a
labryrinth of narrow alleys among whitewashed
houses, fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat and
apple orchards. Nilgiri Peak, which dominates
the southern skyline at Kagbeni, continues to
loom massively at the foot of the valley. Beyond
Tangbe, we reach Chusang village and cross the
river, continue climbing north up the trail to a
huge red chunk of rock that has fallen from the
cliff above, forming a tunnel through which the
Kali Gandaki flows. The trek now leaves the Kali
Gandaki valley and climbs steeply up a rocky
gully to Chele at 3300m.The culture changes from
the Manangi culture to the Tibetan culture of
Lo. |

Chele-Geling(3500m) :
The Climb continues along steep, treeless,
waterless terrain, along the side of a
spectacular steep canyon to a pass and cairn of
rock at 3500m . Then the trail makes a long,
gradual descent to some chortens on a ridge,
before descending further on a pleasant trail to
Samar. The Annapurna, still dominated by Nilgiri,
is visible far to the south. The route climbs
sharply up and down over a series of high
passes, before the final descent to Geling. |
Day 07
Geling-Charang(3550m) :
From Geling the trail climbs gently to the most
interesting pass on your trek, Nyi La and
descends beneath blue, grey and red cliffs
across the valley to a bridge over the Tangmar
Chu River, then climbs past what is perhaps the
longest and most spectacular mani (prayer wall)
in Nepal. Climbing over another pass at 3550m.
the route makes a long gentle descent to Charang.
The huge five-story white Dzong (fort) and red
Gompa (Buddhist temple) contains a fascinating
array of statues and Thankas as well as many
large paintings of seated Buddhas. |
Day 08
Charang- Lo Mantang(3800m) :
The trail descends about 100 meters from Charang,
crosses the Charang-Chu, climbs steeply up a
rocky trail to a cairn on a ridge and continues
to climb. Finally from a ridge at 3800m. there
is a view of the walled city at Lo Mantang.
It is also the first of a three day festival. It
is the Tilji Lama Dance and it is very important
to the Lo people. It follows non stop prayer
sessions addressed to the deities seeking
blessings for the good of all mankind. Masked
Lamas of the region perform various religious
rituals accompanied by singing and dancing. |

newest and most active Gompa in Lo. In the
eastern valley lies the village of Chosar, also
rich in gompas and the valley is the main
trading route to Lhasa.
These areas require an additional permit costing
$210.00 per person and it needs to be arranged
before leaving Kathmandu should you choose to
add these to the itinerary. |
Day 11 Lo
Mantang-Ghami via Gekar (3600m) :
This is an opportunity to visit two other
villages on your return trek. The trail climbs
steadily to the pass marked by a cairn, offering
a last glimpse of Lo Mantang. Crossing a ridge
at 3600m. the trial then goes bumpily to Gekhar.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Every effort will be made to keep to the above
itinerary, but as this is adventure travel in a
remote mountain region, we cannot guarantee it!
Weather conditions, availability of porters and
the health of climbers can all contribute to
changes. The guides and their Sherpa assistants
will try to ensure that the trip runs according
to plan, but please be prepared to be flexible
if necessary.
Team Composition : The
trek will be led by an experienced English
Nepali trekking guide. In selecting suitable
leaders, we not only look to ensure that they
have the relevant qualifications but we also
ensure that they have a good track record of
trekking at high altitudes. Whilst
qualifications and experience are essential
requirements, we also make sure that our guide
have the right temperament to lead a trek group
comprised of individuals who have a range of
previous experience and expectations. The leader
is a vital contributor to the enjoyment and
well-being of the trekking members and he or she
will be there to deal with any unexpected
problems. To that end, we aim to provide a guide
who will make the expedition both successful and
enjoyable throughout. . A well-trained cook and
kitchen crew provide all the meals on trek and
our team of local porters will carry your
personal gear.
Food & Accommodation :
You are accommodated in tents whilst on trek. We
usually camp near lodges and are able to use the
lodges in the evenings, but retire to our own
tents at night. Some of the lodges are very busy
and in some villages, we camp well away in more
picturesque spots. We have our own cook team who
will do all the cooking on trek..
Experience Required :
The Mustang Trek is suitable for keen walkers
who are able to walk for 6 – 7 hours in a day,
with a light rucksack. Some of the days are
quite long, and the walking feels more strenuous
at altitude. Generally the trail is a good
track, but occasionally it will be uneven and
rocky.
Porter Protection : Any
trek or expedition to Nepal relies on the hard
work of local porters. It is their carrying of
our supplies and baggage that makes a journey
into the mountains possible. We careful to
ensure that they are well treated, not exploited
and have good protection from the elements. We
provide shelter, clothing and footwear that
match the severity of the environment. Porters
who become sick are treated with the same care
and attention as team members,
Recommended equipment list :
Trekkers need to provide their own personal
clothing and equipment. Some items of equipment
such like sleeping bag and down jacket are
available for hire from us.
