Mustang Fixed Tiji Festival, 17 Days grade 3

Mustang was only opened to trekkerrs in 1991. The Department of Immigration issues only a small number of special permits to protect the local Tibetan traditions from outside influence as well as to protect the environment. This semi-autonomous, heavily Tibetan influenced region was described by Tilman as “Fascinatingly ugly country, the more fascinating for being so little known.” Indeed, the trek to Lo Mantang is through an almost treeless, barren landscape, along a steeply undulating rocky trail, from which there are panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhauligiri and a range of other soaring peaks.

Itinerary of Mustang Fixed Tiji Festival In Detail

Day 01 Welcome to Kathmandu :
Langtang RI Representative will welcome groups at Kathmandu Airport with a banner and drop them to Hotel Vaishali ..After check-in at the hotel and refreshments, LRT office management and guide will formally introduce themselves and provide a trip briefing. Group should have handled International flight tickets reconfirmation and submit 2 passport size pictures and Passport copy to the office management. The rest of the day is free to explore the local area.

Day 02 Kathmandu Sightseeing :
After breakfast, we start an interesting tour around Kathmandu stands at 1350 meters and the valley is surrounded by hills at an altitude of around 2400 meters. Escorting by an English-speaking guide, try to give them a full taste of our vivid culture image and an enchanting manner of its people. In our sightseeing tour we go to Katmandu Darbar square, Swambhunath (Monkey temple) and Pashupatinath.After lunch you will drive to Patan. The rest of the day can be spent browsing the hundreds of shops and stalls selling everything from Kashmir carpets & Tibetan handicrafts to the latest reading materials. Overnight in hotel.

Day 03 Kathmandu – Pokhara :
Transferred by tourist bus for your 6 -hour drive to Pokhara, a beautiful town set on the banks of the Phewa Lake. It is smaller and much less. It is smaller and much less hectic than Kathmandu and is the perfect starting point for our trek.

Day 04 Pokhara-Jomsom(2810m) :
Fly to Jomsom, 2700m (weather permitting). Other wise stay and enjoy Pokhara. Jomsom is the district headquarters of Mustang and start trek to Kagbeni 2810m, the starting point of of the upper Mustang

Day 05 Kagbeni-Chele (3300m) :
There is a trail up the east bank of the Kali Gandaki that climbs over many ridges as it heads north and reaches Tangbe village. The town is a labryrinth of narrow alleys among whitewashed houses, fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat and apple orchards. Nilgiri Peak, which dominates the southern skyline at Kagbeni, continues to loom massively at the foot of the valley. Beyond Tangbe, we reach Chusang village and cross the river, continue climbing north up the trail to a huge red chunk of rock that has fallen from the cliff above, forming a tunnel through which the Kali Gandaki flows. The trek now leaves the Kali Gandaki valley and climbs steeply up a rocky gully to Chele at 3300m.The culture changes from the Manangi culture to the Tibetan culture of Lo.

Day 06 Chele-Geling(3500m) :
The Climb continues along steep, treeless, waterless terrain, along the side of a spectacular steep canyon to a pass and cairn of rock at 3500m . Then the trail makes a long, gradual descent to some chortens on a ridge, before descending further on a pleasant trail to Samar. The Annapurna, still dominated by Nilgiri, is visible far to the south. The route climbs sharply up and down over a series of high passes, before the final descent to Geling.

Day 07 Geling-Charang(3550m) :
From Geling the trail climbs gently to the most interesting pass on your trek, Nyi La and descends beneath blue, grey and red cliffs across the valley to a bridge over the Tangmar Chu River, then climbs past what is perhaps the longest and most spectacular mani (prayer wall) in Nepal. Climbing over another pass at 3550m. the route makes a long gentle descent to Charang. The huge five-story white Dzong (fort) and red Gompa (Buddhist temple) contains a fascinating array of statues and Thankas as well as many large paintings of seated Buddhas.

Day 08 Charang- Lo Mantang(3800m) :
The trail descends about 100 meters from Charang, crosses the Charang-Chu, climbs steeply up a rocky trail to a cairn on a ridge and continues to climb. Finally from a ridge at 3800m. there is a view of the walled city at Lo Mantang.
It is also the first of a three day festival. It is the Tilji Lama Dance and it is very important to the Lo people. It follows non stop prayer sessions addressed to the deities seeking blessings for the good of all mankind. Masked Lamas of the region perform various religious rituals accompanied by singing and dancing.

Day 09 Lo Mantang :
This is day two of the festival. Enjoy it at your own pace.
Another day in Lo Mantang also gives you the chance to explore its many sights; the Tall Champa Lakhang (God House), the red Thugchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa and the Raja’s Palace as well as to gaze at the surrounding panoramic views of the Tibvetan Plateau and the Himalalya.

Day 10 Lo Mantang :
This is day three of the festival Continue to enjoy it at your own pace.
Besides Lo Mantang there are two other interesting valleys worth visiting. The western valley Tinghar, the sight of the Raja’s summer palace; Kimling and Phuwa as well as the Gompa of Namgyal (The Monastery of Victory) is the newest and most active Gompa in Lo. In the eastern valley lies the village of Chosar, also rich in gompas and the valley is the main trading route to Lhasa.
These areas require an additional permit costing $210.00 per person and it needs to be arranged before leaving Kathmandu should you choose to add these to the itinerary.

Day 11 Lo Mantang-Ghami via Gekar (3600m) :
This is an opportunity to visit two other villages on your return trek. The trail climbs steadily to the pass marked by a cairn, offering a last glimpse of Lo Mantang. Crossing a ridge at 3600m. the trial then goes bumpily to Gekhar. Lo Gekar Gompa is one of the oldest gompas in Nepal. And is older than the famed Samye Gompa in Tibet. Passing through Thamar village, the steep trail finally reaches Ghami.

Day 12 Ghami-Samar :
From Ghami we climb to Nyi La and descend through the same route.

Day 13 - 14 Samar-Kagbeni-Jomsom :

Team Composition : The trek will be led by an experienced English Nepali trekking guide. In selecting suitable leaders, we not only look to ensure that they have the relevant qualifications but we also ensure that they have a good track record of trekking at high altitudes. Whilst qualifications and experience are essential requirements, we also make sure that our guide have the right temperament to lead a trek group comprised of individuals who have a range of previous experience and expectations. The leader is a vital contributor to the enjoyment and well-being of the trekking members and he or she will be there to deal with any unexpected problems. To that end, we aim to provide a guide who will make the expedition both successful and enjoyable throughout. . A well-trained cook and kitchen crew provide all the meals on trek and our team of local porters will carry your personal gear.

Some of the lodges are very busy and in some villages, we camp well away in more picturesque spots. We have our own cook team who will do all the cooking on trek..

Experience Required : The Mustang Trek is suitable for keen walkers who are able to walk for 6 – 7 hours in a day, with a light rucksack. Some of the days are quite long, and the walking feels more strenuous at altitude. Generally the trail is a good track, but occasionally it will be uneven and rocky.

Porter Protection : Any trek or expedition to Nepal relies on the hard work of local porters. It is their carrying of our supplies and baggage that makes a journey into the mountains possible.
